ABOUT

REK. is a performance recorder for iPhone. Plug in any USB-C class-compliant device and press the red one; every pass makes a new take. The record path is 32-bit float by default, so there is no clipping ceiling on the way in, at 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz, stereo when the route offers it. Takes live on the phone in Files.app, named for when they happened, and export bit-exact as WAV, AIFF or AAC. A metronome offers count-in, one or two bars, 40 to 240 BPM. The device has three appearances and ten accents; knobs stay where you left them and Core Haptics sits under the buttons. A failed write keeps the take. Low storage warns rather than refuses. The free version records one minute per take; one payment unlocks unlimited length.

DELIBERATELY NOT

REK. is deliberately not a DAW. There is no overdub, no layering, no stems and no MP3. There is no account, no cloud and no sync spinner; nothing to sign in to and nothing to restore. There is no iPad or Android version. It is sized for one hand and one thumb, and the deck is fixed on purpose. Record is on the first screen when you open the app, and the manual is the red button.
